Security Event at Abertay
Students studying BSc (Hons) Ethical Hacking and Countermeasures organised a conference in October. Keynote speakers from across the UK participated in the event.
The School of Computing and Engineering Systems at Abertay is a very special and exciting place to study and to carry out research. Our programmes are founded upon academic quality, innovation, and close ties to industry. We have refreshed our commitment to research. Every member of the academic staff is actively working on our one of our research themes and we aim to become a leading centre for the advancement of knowledge in:
- Computer Security - keeping you safe
Includes topics such as ethical hacking &
countermeasures, digital forensics, computer
intelligence. - Pervasive & Cloud Technology - connecting people to the cloud
Computing is changing from fixed workstations
to mobile devices that access data stored on
remote servers. How can we make the most of
such systems? - HCI & Intelligent Living - designing for people
How can we make systems easier to use. And with
an ageing population, how can we help the infirm
stay in their own homes while still providing
effective care? - Smart Grids - providing for people
Increasing demand for energy counters the need
to reduce carbon emissions. How can we design
distribution systems that adapt to demand and
minimise waste.
Security is a key driver for all the research work carried out in CES. Not only security, but useable security.
Anyone can make a secure system but it's much more difficult to make a secure system that is useable. Here in CES, we believe that both usability and security must be designed in from the start. Our research work includes gaining intelligence from data, using ethical hacking to provide protection, biometrics to authenticate systems, and taking measures to secure critical elements of our infrastructure such as the electricity grid.

A recent refurbishment has provided excellent new research facilities.
We have established a reputation with key organisations in the security industry based on our novel Ethical Hacking education programmes, and we intend to build upon this in other areas of computer security research.
This web site aims to provide some insight into the work we do here at Abertay University and to provide a point of contact with our staff.
We are an ambitious School. Our goal is to become the leading School of our type in Scotland, researching the technologies of tomorrow and shaping the future of computing and engineering systems.
